New horizons: Exploring novel psychedelic substances

Description
Join us for a talk by Soma Makai-Bölöni (clinical scientist, PhD candidate) and Fas Krol (medical doctor), two researchers at the Centre for Human Drug Research (CHDR) in Leiden, on exploring novel psychedelic substances for both psychiatric disorders and somatic illness. Although psychedelic science is primarily centered around molecules that have existed for decades synthetically (LSD, ketamine, MDMA) or have been used by humans from natural sources for centuries (psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, mescaline containing cacti), there is a growing interest in developing novel psychedelic substances derived from these “classic” molecules. Novel substances may show more favorable safety profiles, different duration times or subjective effects that could be more suitable for specific therapeutic applications. From an industry perspective, naturally there are also commercial incentives for bringing novel substances on the market. In this talk, Soma and Fas will present their findings from their work investigating novel psychedelics and discuss the potential future of these molecules in science and therapy.
